The Best Way to Clean Your Blinds

Tips and Tricks on Blind Cleaning
In order to keep your window blinds and treatments looking new, it is necessary to clean them regularly. There are a variety of ways to do this, and the products required to clean your window treatments are available at many stores where common household products are sold. It is also important to prep the window area by keeping the surrounding floor area covered, especially if the windows have been neglected, accumulating a large build up of dust.

Cleaning Your Window Blinds

A duster is a popular method of cleaning window blinds. They come in a variety of styles, feather being one of the most popular. Another popular method involves an aerosol anti-dust spray can used with a cloth to wipe down the window treatments. Finally, if you have a vacuum with a soft brush tip, you can use it to clean your blinds in addition to cleaning your carpets. With the soft brush tip attached to the vacuum, run the nozzle gently against the blinds following the direction they are mounted (vertical blinds vertically and horizontal blinds horizontally) to collect any and all dust. If necessary, gently lift blinds to get to hard to reach places, but be very careful as it is very easy to bend and damage a blind depending on the material it’s made from. If you have sturdier aluminum blinds, you can use a cloth with soapy water to wipe down each blind individually. This is where the prep work with the towel really comes in to play, as you don’t want dirty soapy water all over your furniture and carpets. Wood blinds will require a wood cleaner because water will eventually warp the wood making your blinds both ugly and useless.

Cleaning your window blinds and treatments should be done around three to four times a year to prevent a buildup of dirt and grime. If the blinds have been neglected and there is a large buildup of grime, the best method is to remove the entire window treatment from the window itself and either hose them down outside or wash them in a sink or bathtub with soapy water. Otherwise, paper towels or sponges used with common household cleaners and a little bit of elbow grease should be able to clean up just about everything you can reach. Try not to let your window blinds get to this state though as it is a lot harder to get them as clean and new looking as it is when there’s a light dust covering.
